I made Gunthar cry...
Dec. 31st, 2006 10:19 pmLast night, for an early New Year's celebration,
gunthar and I went to Rafain's, a Brazilian steakhouse. I had been several times to one of their competitors but he had never been and really wanted to try it. The restaurant was running a special through the 30th (hence our "early" New Year's Eve) so we decided to make a night of it.
Let me preface this next part by saying that although I do not drink much, I do have an affinity for martinis and usually start my meal at a nice restaurant with one (or two). Gunthar had never tried one, had listened to me rave over some that I've had, and decided to try one after discussing the merits of gin vs. vodka. I will drink either, but he detests vodka and compares it to rubbing alcohol (the philestine). Also discussed, after watching an episode of Alton Brown's Good Eats was the preferable amount of vermouth. I prefer mine very dry (swirl the vermouth around the glass and pour it out) but I didn't think he would like that the first go 'round and suggested he try either a regular martini or a perfect martini (which is nearly equal amounts of gin or vodka and vermouth). Gunthar went with the regular.
Let me tell you, the look on his face at his first taste was a riot. "How can you drink this?" he gasped. "It's an acquired taste," I responded, which resulted in a look of complete disbelief on his part. "You don't have to finish it," I told him, to which he replied, "I paid ten dollars for this goddam drink and I'm finishing it!" Thank God the food started arriving at this point, so he could counter each sip with something to remove the taste while he wiped the tears from his eyes. It made for an amusing first half of our dinner.
Vile martini aside, we had an enjoyable dinner and ate more meat than I care to admit to. I ordered one of Rafain's sampler trios of wine and we both went crazy over a Coppola Pinot Grigio that was simply superb. In fact, we went out and bought a bottle of it this afternoon. We came home slightly tipsy and very full, having had a wonderful time together.
Happy New Year wishes to all my friends at LJ!
