Crown Tournament was this weekend, and I have mixed feelings about it. [livejournal.com profile] count_gunthar decided he wanted to fight so that he could make Sara a duchess. I was just fine with that -- Sara means a lot to him and I do not mind that he fights for other ladies on occasion. The decision was his and I told him I would support him in whatever he decided.

The weather was blisteringly hot – disappointing after two weeks of lovely weather in Central Texas -- and the sun that day was brutal. Even worse, there were no trees on the site except at the fringes of the list field. Frankly, I don’t know how Gunthar could stand the heat in 50 lbs. of armor, a linen undershirt and a cotton tunic when I was sweating in my light linen cotehardie and I was able to remove my long sleeves. We kept him hydrated as best we could and bless Miguel and Conal for bringing the Porto tent and Geoffrey for setting it up. And I also appreciate the assistance of Gunthar’s squire, Karolus Janos, his lady Victoria, and Lady Amalia for helping me in my efforts to assist Gunthar and for keeping me from getting the biggest sunburn of my life by plopping a hat on my head each time I headed out to the list field.

Not surprisingly, Gunthar made it to the finals. Not all of his fights were up to his full potential (as it is when he consistently trains and is focused), but his last two before the final were clean and well fought on both sides. When Duke Patrick Michael ducaled to Gunthar, it made me and Sara cry. In the end, with much trial and tribulation that I will not go into here, he lost to Romanius. I was not happy with the outcome, but as Miguel succinctly said, Romanius got the “pointy hat” and that's all that matters in the end.

What I will say is that Gunthar showed to all attending what it is to be a knight in the SCA. He was courteous to his opponents and concerned with their welfare both on the field and off. His opponents’ ladies were honored at each bout with a rose. He was attentive to the Queen when she required his concentration. And he was conscientious to me even when he was focused on the tournament and I was not expecting it. I was not the only one who noticed this. At court, Gunthar received the King’s Blade of Chivalry – something that he had wanted very much and means a great deal to him.

Am I proud of him? Most certainly. Am I disappointed at the outcome? Yes. Will I support his decision to fight in Sara’s honor at the next Crown tourney? Absolutely. Gunthar fought well and with honor. That is all I ever ask of him and I am very proud and honored to be his lady.

Was there value in this, Gunthar? Yes, in the honor you showed, and the honor shown you by those who love and care about you.

What a glorious entry. *This* is what it means to be in the SCA. Thank you for sharing it with us.

Huzzah Gunthar!

I'm sorry I missed Crown. Watching Gunthar fight at Crown is only half the enjoyment. I remember last crown, when even though I didn't know him, he impressed me with his behavior on and off the field. Now that I'm acquainted with him, he impresses me even more. =) And in the kitchen?

You are one lucky lady...who needs a hat.

Hi from Lucia!

Hey girlie! Sorry I didn't get to see you at Crown! I was there, but suffering the heat on the far side of the list field and I never cooled off enough to venture out. What are you going to next? Are you coming south for Legacy of Lions?

I think Namron is next on the schedule. September was really, really busy and I'm limiting myself to one or two events this month. I saw Iago, but didn't get a chance to venture over to the other side of the list field to see if I could find you. As you could tell, I was a little busy! ;-)
