Nothing short of...well, just amazing
Nov. 19th, 2007 11:30 amCrown Tournament Take Two was this weekend following the Bordermarch Autumn Melees. Gunthar and I decided wisely to make it an easier weekend by not heading down to the southern regions of East Texas on Friday night to set up camp, although we were truly impressed by the number of people who did and the number of period tents. The site is pretty and the castle is pretty cool, but I digress...
Those of you who know us and read Gunthar's LJ know the difficulties he's had with his fighting over the last year or so. With his body not cooperating, his endurance was nil, and that affected his confidence in his abilities, which affected his performance, which made him second guess himself, etc. A really vicious little cycle. And the scare at the Crown Tournament That Wasn't last month made matters all the worse.
Those days are over people. Gunthar's fighting was truly amazing to watch yesterday. I know you can call me a little prejudiced about it, but I am certainly not the only one who noticed given the number of people who stopped to say something personally to him afterwards. He never lost a fight to an opponent going into the finals, relaxed and laughed during fights, made pretty speeches to me and to the crowds, until it came down to him and Duke Aaron MacGregor. And it took Aaron three full rounds in the finals to finally take Gunthar down, when it could have gone either way because both of them were down a point at the very last. It simply took my breath away and I know I'm not the only one who was that affected. He truly was a hero on the field and I was so very honored to be his Consort.
Me? I was a nervous wreck the entire time. Each and every time I stood by the list field and watched him fight, my stomach was in knots, despite the fact that it was patently obvious he was having a good time and doing well. When Aaron's consort, Countess Vanessa, and I stood side by side and watched the round robin semi-finals as we held hands, we both laughed nervously when we realized we were tugging on each other in response to blows our Knights were giving each other (BTW, Gunthar beat Aaron in that round and was the only fighter going into the finals with no losses). When we stood with Her Majesty during the final round, between her squeezing our hands to death and our jerking her around, I'm sure we made an interesting looking trio. And Her Majesty mentioned that she was not really nervous when His Majesty fought for her in the Spring Crown, but she was so nervous about this one she was afraid she was going to throw up.
In the end, Aaron won the most exciting Crown Tournament Ansteorra has seen in a while. And I am so very proud of Gunthar and the magnificent skills he displayed. To me (and I suspect a few others), he exemplifies honor, chivalry and courage -- everything that you expect from a Knight of the Realm.
Vivat, Gunthar. YOU are my hero.
