We was Robbed!!!
Oct. 31st, 2007 11:10 amSometime between the hours of 10am and 6pm yesterday, someone (or someones) took a crowbar to our front door and popped the deadbolt. It was a "smash and grab" in that they only took things they could carry out without anyone in the apartment complex noticing. They took my laptop (sob!), my medieval/renaissance costume jewelry, and Gunthar's leather valet that held about $10 in change and a silver ring. The idiots only rummaged through the top drawers of the dressers, completely missing my jewelry box in one of the lower drawers. They also missed the Roseville Pottery (probably because they didn't know it was valuable), Gunthar's desktop computer, the silver, the camera, the flat-screen TV (although it appears they considered it) and both flat-screen computer monitors. Both fireproof lockboxes were opened (mine had been forced with the crowbar), but all they found were papers that they left scattered all over our bed and the living room floor.
My biggest fear upon opening the front door was that I couldn't find one of the cats. Allie popped up pretty quickly when I started calling for them, but Maddie was no where to be found and I panicked. Poor Gunthar had to deal with my hysteria when I called him after calling 911. Maddie appeared from behind all of my garb hanging in the master bedroom closet during the phone call, for which I was very, very grateful. I don't care about the material things because they're replaceable -- but don't hurt my babies. They obviously high-tailed it to the closet and hid while the jerk (or jerks) went through our stuff. Good girls!
The police arrived pretty quickly. I was amused when they questioned me about the door to an apartment downstairs that was covered in crime scene tape. "Um, hello? Halloween?" They took the initial information and told me someone from their Physical Evidence lab would be there within an hour or so. The on-call maintenance guy for the complex was great. John showed up shortly after I called to examine the door and determine whether or not it needed to be replaced because of the crowbar damage (it didn't) and hung around until he was allowed to fix the damaged deadbolt because we couldn't close the door until he did so. After several phone calls, the tech from Physical Evidence finally showed up at 12:45am, but he did manage to get a fingerprint off a laquered music box the thieves left on the bed. I'm not holding my breath that it will actually score a hit in the database, but I can hope.
We didn't get to bed until 1:30am and it was after 2am before I fell asleep. Obviously, I didn't sleep well and I'm dragging today. Hopefully, the detective from the police department will call today so I can give him/her the serial number on my laptop. It's not a critical thing, but I'd like it back if it's been pawned somewhere.
Overall, October has NOT been a good month.
