Twelfth Night Surprise
Jan. 8th, 2007 12:18 pmSteppes 12th Night was a wonderous event. The hall was draped in swag and banners, the tables were finely decorated, the merchants appeared to be pleased with their set ups (which was good, since I was the merchanting coordinator for the event) and everyone appeared to have a good time in their finery. I have to say that between set up on Friday and helping in the kitchen on Saturday, I was exhausted when we got home. Kudos to
count_gunthar for allowing me to "volunteer" him to help without much kicking and screaming in protest on his part.
Because we did not have a royal presence at the event, I assumed that there would be no kingdom-level awards given during court. Boy, was I wrong. After the opening preliminaries were taken care of, the next thing I heard was my name being called. Thinking I was up for a Barony service award, I was escorted up to kneel before the Baron and Baroness, and listened as Mahdi went on to give me praise for all of the work I've done for the Barony and the Kingdom over the last year. Then, I went into shock when Sir Morgan announced my Award of Arms. While Morgan read the scroll, Mahdi held my hand and informed me that Aaron and Britta were insistent that I receive the award during their reign and had specifically asked Mahadi and Valeria to present it to me at 12th Night. To say I was stunned was putting it mildly. After we returned to our seats, Gunthar told me he had nothing to do with my receiving the AoA, that Sir Morgan and the Oaks of the Steppes had petitioned their Majesties to give it to me. Wow!
I have been playing in the SCA for less than a year. Helping out at events seemed to be the right thing to do, because it's my nature to help organize (something to do with that OCD thing, I guess). In doing so, I've made a number of good friends and good acquaintances. I am honored, grateful, ecstatic, and, yes, stunned that I received this -- even more so because it wasn't at the insistence of my lord, who loves me, but at that of my friends. I did not expect this.
Several friends mentioned and
shonao posted that the look on my face when the award was announced was priceless. Karolus was taking pictures, so I'll get to see for myself. A big thank you to all my friends for the hugs and congratulations that night. It made all the hard work this year more than worth it.
Lest I forget, I must also congratulate Constance Elizabeth Campbell for also recceiving her AoA and Ingve of York for his elevation to the Oaks of the Steppes. It was definitely a night for celebrating!
